Press Statement

It is learned that on Sunday, 3 April, 2016, a shootout in the heart of Asmara (near Bar Tiblez) initiated by Eritrean military personnel against national service conscripts, who tried to escape by jumping out of a convey of trucks taking them to Assab region, left many casualties.

Journalist Martin Plaut also confirmed that the situation of many of the wounded now in hospitals is critically severe. Reliable sources in Asmara also provided to the journalist names of some victims who died and wounded, including the names of two passers-by who were killed in the shooting.

The Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP) strongly condemns this barbaric act, and sends its profound condolence to families of the casualties, and wishes speedy recovery to the wounded persons.

The Eritrean people will never enjoy peace and tranquility unless it removes the criminal regime and the EPDP urges the entire nation to rise up and put an end to the dictatorship by throwing it into the dustbin of history.

The EPDP also strongly urges the European Union (EU) and the Arabian Gulf States to stop the wrong-placed support they are giving to the repressive regime in Eritrea and instead channel their resources to help the Eritrean people and empower the political and civil society movements striving for democratic change in Eritrea.

Victory to the Just Cause of the Eritrean People!

Menghesteab Asmerom,

Chairman, Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP)
