In a message addressed to Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano on Friday, 25 August 2017, the Eritrean People's Democratic Party (EPDP) expressed its shock and sadness on the sudden eviction from a temorary shelter of helpless Eritrean and Ethiopian refugees and urged the Italian Government to address the problem as a matter of urgency.

The EPDP message noted that the action deeply saddened many Eritreans who still consider Italy much closer to them than the rest of Europe because of historical ties.  It further stated that, on top of the international law obligation to protect the right of refugees, Italy has "a moral responsibility towards Eritrea and its suffering people."

Reports had it that upto 800 persons, including children and mothers, were thrown out of a building near Rome's Termini railway station in which they took shelter since 2013.
