Report on Skirmishes on the Eritrea-Ethiopia Border
There have been reports, as of the eve of 24 May 2012 that continued small skirmishes were taking place between the Eritrean and Ethiopian armies in the border areas. Although most of the incidents were taking place within a triangle in the Badme region, sporadic shootings did not spare the central front from Alitena to Tserona, which was the war zone in the 1998-2000 armed hostilities between the two countries.
In the Badme front, armed confrontations between small units and exchange of bombardment by long-range canons are continuous, especially since 27 May. As a result, casualties on human lives and livestock and property destruction are reported.
Sources inform that the Ethiopian army is now well inside Eritrea north of Badme and in control of the villages of Tahtai Deda, Lalai Deda, Adi Teklai, Dembe Duma, and Adi Hizbai. Other mobile units of the Ethiopian army frequently penetrate into the areas across Shambuko (south of Gash River). It thus means that the Ethiopian army is in control the eastern Gash River zone from across Shambuko down to the Mereb River by permanently stationed units and mobile forces.
The Eritrean army has not yet abandoned its hold on areas south-west of the region now controlled by the Ethiopian army; this area includes villages up to Shilalo and Sheshebi. Furthermore, the PFDJ regime is reportedly continuing to distribute arms to men beyond the age of 60, and in certain areas also to women.
Civilians are abandoning the war zone in big numbers, taking whatever they can of their livestock and property, and taking temporary shelter in nearby towns and villages.
The hostilities continue intensifying and both armies are engaged in training and reinforcing their units and positions. Although both sides acknowledge the presence of opposition forces on both sides of the frontier, the ongoing skirmishes through the use of heavy weapons not hitherto possessed by those opposition groups will not allow Ethiopia or Eritrea to claim that the skirmishes are conducted by their proxies (the opposition forces).
No one could tell who started the shooting, but there remains a probability that this attrition-type of skirmishes can go beyond mutual irritation schemes and flare up into a full-fledged war. Up to this moment, both Ethiopia and Eritrea have opted to keep silent on what is going on.
